If you had a time machine where would you go? Would you sculpt with Michelangelo, fly with the Wright brothers, or maybe watch Queen perform at Live Aid?

Those are just some of the great places you can visit in Trekking Through History, which gives you a time machine and three days to visit as many important times and places as you can!

The Timey-Wimey box!

On your turn, you get to choose which period to visit from the row of cards on the colourful playmat. Each card shows the year an event took place, the time cost to visit it, plus any benefits it provides. You earn points by collecting big runs of cards that go from the past to the future in order, and by unlocking the bonuses shown on your itinerary board. At the end of three days you return to the present and whoever has done the best job can declare victory!

Trekking Through History is quick to learn and play, but manages to fit plenty of interesting decisions into each round. We love how you’re often asked to choose between taking the right card to extend your run or finishing sections of your itinerary, even though you really want to do both!

So many cool places to visit!

The game is great as is, but we really liked the included variant where you draw a ‘time warp’ card each round. These alter the rules, scoring or abilities and add a nice bit of variety to the mix once you’re familiar with the base game. While we don’t really look for educational value in our games, that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy it when it comes along. The little historical facts on the back of each card are a welcome addition and we enjoyed learning a little history as we played.

We’ve had a lot of fun playing Trekking Through History. It’s incredibly well produced and sits right in that sweet spot between family and enthusiast game. While most decisions are quite easy, they are also meaningful and there’s enough here to keep us coming back to it – time after time!
