Ours is a house divided. Steph is a lifelong Star Wars fan while I think it’s only logical to prefer another franchise that also starts with “Star”. That hasn’t stopped us from both enjoying Star Wars Bounty Hunters, a fantastic new release from Zygomatic Games.

In Bounty Hunters, players race to capture high value fugitives by hiring the best mercenaries and droids they can afford. Your targets won’t come willingly, so before you can bring them in you need to break down their defences by playing enough attacking cards to disable their shields.

It’s easy to learn, especially if you’ve played games like Sushi Go or 7 Wonders, as it uses the same pick and pass action that they do. On your turn you just choose a new card to draw then pick one to play before giving the rest of your hand to the next player.

Everyone takes their turn at the same time, so it’s nice and fast with no downtime while you wait for other players. That makes it a great choice for keeping everyone involved plus you get the added amusement that comes when things inevitably get out of sync!

The gameplay fits nicely with the theme and we’ve had fun seeing all of the familiar characters, like Boba Fett and Mando as hunters, and Chewie and Grogu as targets. It’s great to see them all included but we do feel kind of bad each time we have them capture one of the good guys!

There is a bit of luck involved, as some cards will help you more than others, but we like that they separated the cards into four types so you can choose to draw from the one that most suits your strategy.

We’ve had fun at 2p and are looking forward to trying it out with some force loving friends as soon as we’ve defeated the Empire and can arrange the well-deserved downtime!
