Have you ever watched an old supernatural film and wondered how you would fare against the creature? Well, in Unmatched Adventures: Tales to Amaze by Iello Games you’re given the chance to take on the role of a hero and find out… in the safety of your living room.

Annie Christmas taking out a U.F.O. by punching it… with moral support from Dr. Jill Trent, Daisy, and Charlie.

Previously, the Unmatched series saw you go head-to-head with other players. In Tales to Amaze, you take on the role of 1 of 4 heroes (Nikola Tesla, Annie Christmas, Golden Bat, or Dr. Jill Trent), each with unique abilities, to compete against the game!

The game has 2 main villains; Mothman and the Alien Invader. Play the Mothman board and you’ll be racing against time to defeat him before he destroys all 4 bridges. Play the Alien Invader board, and you’ll be working to stop the Invader before the 4th invasion token is revealed.

Nikola Tesla & Golden Bat vs. Mothman, The Blob, and Skunk Ape.

Each game you’ll also be up against 2 minions (selected by you). These include the Ant Queen, Blob, Skunk Ape, Jersey Devil, Tarantula, and the Loveland Frog. It’s not necessary to defeat them to win, but it can be detrimental to ignore them.

You move, fight, and defend by taking actions and playing cards from your hand. Villains fight and defend by revealing the top card of their deck, and move automatically. A threat track at the top of the board advances with events and increases the risk of the villain achieving its objective.

Card types include attack, defence, versatile (attack or defence), and scheme (special action cards).

Mothman successfully defended this round, but it’s not over yet…

I haven’t played Unmatched before, but I felt like the game did a good job of introducing me to the system. I love how immersive the game is. Everything is so well-themed, from artwork to miniatures – even the health dials look amazing! But it’s not all about looks – how does it play? It’s super fun, but also challenging. I have yet to win a game, but I’m always left feeling like it’ll be the next game that I win. So, I reset the board to try again. There are so many hero and villain combinations to experiment with in this box, but it’s also compatible with the rest of theUnmatched series if you’d like even more variation.

If you enjoy Castle Panic, Horrified, or Pandemic, definitely check this one out!
